This was quite entertaining and not at all what I expected. It certainly wasn't run of the mill by any stretch. Navy Commander Sir Henry Thresher survived an apparently mortal wound only to subsequently be marooned on an island for over two years. Again, after having been declared dead twice, he surfaced, earning the sobriquet, "Dead Harry." While Harry was having his life experiences, Georgiana was packed off to a girl's school where she stirred things up. After finding a dusty little book (full of fascinating tidbits) while cleaning the headmistress's room, she began anonymously writing her newspaper column, a huge success in Mayfair. Georgiana had a brain ~ against school rules ~ so the headmistress arranged for her to spend the summer with Lady Bramley, learning ladylike behavior. And that's how she met Dead Harry, Lady Bramley's nephew. Lady Bramley and her charge set forth to visit Harry for a month or so.

We began to see that, as a result of the traumas he's suffered, Sir Henry/Dead Harry had a split personality that he was struggling to make whole again. Interestingly, young Georgiana had the empathy and ability to help him. We could see Harry gradually coming together.

The hero and the heroine were admirable and the secondary characters were entertaining. Particularly Lady Bramley who was a hoot.

Her luster was dimmed somewhat, though, when she took Georgiana to the garden for a "conversation exercise." Georgiana was told, "Now, as we come to each shrub along this path, you must start a new subject and make it interesting. A woman should be able to steer a conversation and keep it flowing smoothly, even if the gentleman at her side has all the personality and good sense of a garden shrub." .....Now this was funny but it would have been funnier if I hadn't heard it a few months ago.....an anecdote told by Lady Carnarvon about her grandmother and her grandmother's governess on the television documentary, MILLION DOLLAR AMERICAN PRINCESSES. Rather than "garden shrub," the governess said "potted plant." I think the governess also said "lady" rather than "woman" ~ minor word changes but the gist is the same.

Lady Bramley also forgot that her son, a baronet, was Sir Mandrake, not Lord Bramley.

Ms. Fresina is a marvelously talented author...very gifted...but I think she could benefit from a good editor.

This is a tough book to review.

Jayne Fresina's writing, as usual, is a wonder to behold. The characters are unique, as are the problems presented.

However, I had a great deal of difficulty keeping my disbelief from jumping out of the shadows and trying to shake some sense into me.

How can a relationship work if the heroine is 19 and very much an immature teenager while the hero is 30 and a man who has suffered an unbearable amount of difficulty in his life?

Even more disturbing, how can that young woman cope with a man who is actively hallucinating and struggling with a dissociative identity disorder that causes him to split into two distinct personalities? Love can cure many things, but I doubt it could do away with major psychological disorders. Even if they were transported into the 21st century with current drugs and therapy and specialists, the couple would have a long and difficult road ahead. With nothing but lots of affection and a truly nifty summerhouse going for them, their future looked pretty murky to me.

I felt so much trepidation and sympathy for the couple that it impaired my enjoyment of the story. And, I wondered about a confident young woman who has never been troubled by what others thought of her, but loses all of that when the hero's drunken lout of a cousin discourages her.

In spite of my qualms, the book held my interest and kept me reading (and even though there is a need for a good editor to fix a number of errors).
Although nowhere near as close to romance perfection as Fresina's TRUE STORY, this is still a really good read. 19-year-old Georgiana Hathaway, daughter of a newspaper owner, has a problem with restrictions and conforming to society's expectations. She wants a career, wants her freedom, wants to be able to use her very good brain, thank you very much, and to be able to speak her mind.

Well, nobody else wants that for her. She has been sent off to The Particular Establishment for the Advantage of Respectable Ladies to learn behavior modification with little to show for her years there but the antagonism of the headmistress and a budding career as the writer of a rather scandalous weekly serial, "His Lordship's Trousers", which is published anonymously in her father's newspaper (with even her father unaware of the author's identity).

And we also have "Dead" Harry Thrasher, a former Navy man, who had been declared dead twice and had his obituary written twice. Once after a "mortal wound" and once after having been lost at sea for more than two years. Although now considered a hero, Dead Harry is not the man he used to be, especially because of all that "alone" time on an island before his rescue. He can't fit himself into society's restrictive confines anymore and lives an isolated life on his estate. He also has some other problems which you will find out about as you read.

Well, obviously, these two are going to have to find each other. One may very well be just what the other needs. The relationship and the romance is beautifully developed, there's lots of warmth and humor in the story, the main and secondary characters are very nicely drawn and this is one of the most unique HRs I've read in some time. From the title, I was expecting more of a comedy, Yes, it does have some very funny moments to it and some very funny characters, but there's a seriousness to this that I hadn't been expecting but thoroughly welcomed. All in all, it's a book well written and worth reading.

In her review here, one of my favorite HR reviewers, lark, mentions a few missteps Fresina has made in the story. I'll have to add that, although I appreciate the way Fresina writes, she has the habit of confusing "lie" and "lay" and "imply" and "infer" in many of her books and does here also. Those are strange grammatical errors, considering how polished her writing is. This doesn't keep me from enjoying her work, however, and I'm looking forward to the next book in this new series.
