The Eaters Book One Origin Corrie Brundage 9781632260598 Books

Full disclosure: I know the author very well; my expectations were high, and so was my trepidation. But the very first line swept all that aside. I was drawn into the story as it grew from Mina’s apartment in a near-future dystopian Manhattan that I both did and didn’t recognize, to the climate-change-ravaged jungles of Nigeria, to… well, the plot took me to places I never dreamed of, and then to places I wanted to dream about.

Corrie Brundage creates scenes with cinematic clarity that unfold at a pitch-perfect pace. The storyline is natural and vivid in the mind’s eye while the text on the page is tight and spare. Impressive craft for fans of the art of storytelling, and an absorbing adventure for the fans of story.

But for me what sets this book apart is the character of Mina. Strong and determined, but quirky and awkward. Beautifully poised in a dress and heels but more at home in jungle mud. And real. Someone you want to know and follow – or be. At times my eyes filled with tears – at her deep rapport with animals, her tentative interactions with people, her challenged romance – and at others my heart suspended in tension and leapt in joy as she figured out ways forward against crushing odds at every turn. And this book is the first of a trilogy. I now know what’s coming, and it just gets better!

The Eaters Book One Origin Corrie Brundage 9781632260598 Books Reviews

The world Ms. Brundage creates in what appears to be the first of a series is brutal and beautiful. Without giving too much of the story away, her narrator is an accomplished woman thrown into incredible circumstances beyond her control. She nonetheless gains some mastery of them. The images of the futuristic city, and of the monsters lurking within, and beyond, this pristine environment are haunting and powerful. The tensions between past and present, civilization and savagery, order and chaos are palpably real. I read this book in two sittings, and look forward to the next in the series.
I really like this book. The writing is clean, the imagery is vivid, and the story just keeps moving, through urban twists and jungle turns, so that I always wanted to know what was going to happen next.

The characters are original and interesting, and each one adds a thread to the tapestry of the fascinating new world of Origin. But what I enjoyed most was how I so strongly identified with the main character, Mina. She is so real and compelling that I saw Origin through her eyes, felt her fears and uncertainties, her determination and strength, and her longings and love. Rarely have I found such an entertaining book so satisfying.

If this is Book One, I can't wait for the rest.
Let me start by letting you in on my trepidation in reading this book in the first place.

My wife is part of a Community Bible Study (CBS) group near us. And Corrie Brundage's mom is in that same group. So when the idea was proffered that I ought to read an unknown author's work because her Mom thought it was worth looking at - it wasn't exactly the kind of recommendation I take without condescending fear. Yeah. Another "my kid's a genius" with the misshapen pottery that the parent dubs avant-garde or so cutting edge that no one else can truly appreciate it. Yeah, I had my misgivings. Misgivings that quickly gave way to a truly fun read and a previously undiscovered new treat.

As I understand it, this is Corrie Brundage's first published outing, and it is a promising one. I'm an old Sci-Fi fan from way back. Asimov, Dick, Heinlein, Bradbury, Orwell, Vonnegut, Sturgeon, the whole bunch. Since my pre-teens. It is a favorite genre, and I am picky. And "The Eaters" was a truly enjoyable read, with characters I liked, and crisp pace that kept me wanting to press on.

One always wonders with a first person narrative - how much of the author is fleshed out. My guess is that Brundage likes to see herself a bit (maybe more than a bit?) like Dr. Mina Brice, which would make her a neat (can I use such an outdated word?) person to know. Brice's mildly neurotic persona is never irritatingly so, and her vulnerable playfulness with love interest Jack is truly sweet and engaging.

I love the overall plot line, (I'm a sucker for all things post-apocalyptic) and am very interested to see where it goes. Given that this volume is "Book One", one assumes at least a Book two if not a three? A trilogy? I look forward to seeing the other(s) pop up soon.

Brundage has avoided the all too common pitfall of over-description, so that the imagination still has its pleasurable work to do. There is romance without crassness and danger without voyeurism. That's a tough balance to keep in today's marketplace. She pulls it off satisfyingly.

If I had any slight criticisms, it would be a few anachronisms. Given the 500 year gap between Mina's watery demise and her clonic resurrection (to coin a term), I would have imagined some greater differences in how some things are named. The "rail pass" for instance is far more than; that and I would have thought designations would have moved beyond "communication device" and "personal computer." But that's pretty small potatoes when all is said and done. They do not detract in any way.

I would have liked to have seen a bit more investigation into Mina's telepathic ability. It seems more hinted at than actually engaged - though perhaps that awaits future installments. And I would have thought a scene where Mina does something with her new research team that somewhat cements why they are so quick to follow her when she schemes to capture eater/Jack and challenge the Traveler's arrangement. I was also looking for a bit more teeth in why the Travelers seemed to give up on their plan so easily. But then again, that may be re-visited in future episodes. So I look forward to deeper explanations rather than getting stuck rueing its absence too much.

Keep writing Corrie - you're going to get a loyal fan base. And I will be glad to be part of it.

p.s. - It would make a great movie. The screenplay would be a breeze given Brundage's open style.
