They say you can't go home again, but Raine St. James doesn't know why anyone would want to.
Rory St. James was disowned after she came out at 17. She rebounded by moving to Chicago, changing her name to Raine and putting down her hometown to audiences around the country. Now, 10 years later, too old to be considered a gay youth, broke, evicted, and fresh off a much needed break-up, Raine St. James is forced to accept a job teaching at Bramble University in Darlington, the town she's been publicly bashing for the last decade.
Beth Devoroux was born and raised in Darlington. Despite losing her parents at a young age, she has been nurtured by the people of the town and is well loved by everyone who knows her. She leads a comfortable life with good job at Bramble University, a long-term but closeted relationship, friends that she can count on, and everything she thinks she wants, so why is she so drawn to a rabble-rouser like Raine St. James?
Two women who couldn't be less suited for romance - a hometown girl and the one who vowed never to look back - are drawn together by a shared past and a passion for each other neither can deny.

Luckily, Rachel Spangler is not only a very good writer, she is also prolific. Start anywhere, read them in order of publication, or not. If you are a reader who likes to read all of an author's work, Spangler has a baker's dozen of delightful books for you. Don't fill up too fast, though. Just as in The Long Way Home, a light and sometimes funny story of you-can't-go-home-again turns out to have some weighty topics. I highly recommend this as a great way to kick off Pride Month.Product details

The Long Way Home (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Spangler Melody Muzljakovich Bold Strokes Books Inc Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this story. I was a little skeptical of this author or story, glad I bought and read this story. I would suggest this book and any books written by this author.
really enjoyed this book loved the characters. I really enjoy a good love story.
This book definitely helps broaden horizons and transcends the improbable. It is possible to sometimes return home. Really enjoyed the journey, well written and captivating.
It was interesting... a journey to discover oneself and make peace with the past, and accept that change is possible, even if it is to go back to what we were once. I enjoyed it just fine, even if the characters sometimes got on my nerves... but in a good way.
This was a nice read, hard to put down. The storyline was compelling and well-written. The plot and characters were very authentic and they kept my interest throughout. I also thought the author handled the topic of coming out very well...I got to see a glimpse of how it affects the parents of a gay/lesbian child as well as the child. Both sides have different issues to cope with and it is hard to put yourself in the other person's shoes most of the time. Well done!
I loved this book. I loved the Rory/Raine character. Excellent plot. Great setting. This book deals with a lot of topics that gay people have to handle.
Lesbian romance fiction has some standard tropes. Not all bad mind you but Rachel Spangler comments that the original coming out story was interesting but she wanted to do more. Well, she did.
The story is based on two women. Rory came out at 17, got the stereotypical response and left home. Rory built a new her as Raine and made a career about her running away, standing up for herself and being true to yourself. However, she needs work and the only job puts her back at the college outside of her hometown. Where she connects with Beth. Beth is not out but fondly remembers Rory while not really caring for Raine. The interconnecting spiral of the two of them is nearly perfect. Both try, both mess up and then things need to be cleaned up afterwards.
We have a college student getting outed to their parents, Raine re-connecting with her family after zero connection for these last ten years, others are fearful of coming out and some are out and happy about it. Small town versus big city attitudes are included in this wide mix of situations. They are well written plus they were fun to read.
Coming back home can be tough. And sometimes, it can be good. Like this book.
Luckily, Rachel Spangler is not only a very good writer, she is also prolific. Start anywhere, read them in order of publication, or not.
