This is the kind of book that, once read, will never be forgotten; and I never have. I read it for the first time almost thirty years ago and, over the years, have often thought about reading it again. Unfortunately, I ‘loaned’ my copy to some forgotten friend and it vanished forever. (Never lend books to friends. You feel so guilty when you try to get them back.) Fortunately, I recently found a copy in our local library’s book store, and bought it. So I finally got to enjoy it a second time.

As before, I found it to be one of the most beautifully written, thoughtful, compelling, and thought-provoking books I’ve ever read. And, as I did before, I concluded that it could only have been written by someone with an intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ and his teachings, and an in depth knowledge of the Catholic Church, the Jewish faith, and Protestant Churches of all denominations. Who else could have written it but a retired Catholic priest with the insight, the will, and the courage to do so? He must have been a wonderful minister.

Bottom line: If you’ve ever wondered what might happen if Jesus of Nazareth returned, unannounced, and began living in your, or some other community, and simply went about ‘his’ business in ‘his’ own way; then this is a book you’ll surely want to read. If you do, I can assure you: You’ll have much to think about, and you’ll never forget it.

I have read the book Joshua a Parable for Today at least twice. I have also seen the movie, which I also love; however being a bookworm at heart since age 9; the book has also had a very special place in my heart.

I particularly enjoy the way the author portrays Joshua's sense of humor. in particular where he teaches a member of the village to cook and honestly he tells her that the food she made did not taste good. Then he proceeds to teach her the correct way to prepare the food. It's very refreshing, because sometimes we think that telling the truth cannot have a little sting, but if it is an honest description; then one cannot lie by omission.

I also particularly enjoyed the subtle hints that the author gives of Joshua's true heritage and origin. For example, he goes to the temple and someone comments that he saying his prayers beautifully and in perfect Hebrew. They then comment, however that it is a dialect which is not very much used anymore.
Another thing I would like to mention is that I also enjoyed the fact that although the Joshua character could be kind and nice, he could also be authoritative and strong when necessary. For example, he is strong when he helps Father Pat with all the things that trouble him. I like the duality in the character.

All of this being said, I know that I will read the book many more times. Therefore, it would be wonderful to be able to add Joshua a Parable For Today to my collection. It is my hope that it will soon be added to the other wonderful Joshua books which are currently available for .
I picked this book up on a whim and began reading it. I could not put it down. I don't think I have ever been as moved by a piece of writing as I was by JOSHUA. I wish everone would read this book. It should be in every church library.

Joshua moves to the small town of Auburn, NY. He lives a quiet life as a wood worker in a small cabin near a lake. As the townspeople get to know him they sense that there is much more to this man than appears on the surface. They begin to bring their problems to him and to rely on Joshua for advice. Joshua is a gentle man who holds some very strong feelings about the Church and religion in genteral. As his popularity grows in the area Joshua is seen as a threat to some established churches and the powerful Catholic Church. Joshua is summoned to Rome. There he goes through an inquisition of sorts, and eventually he has an audience with the Pope. To reveal more would unfair to the reader. Suffice it to say that Joshua can hold his own in any theological discussion.

Buy this book, read it and then buy one for your best friend.
This is one of those wonderfully rare and beautifully written stories that you simply don't want to put down once you start reading! Girzone's story is Biblical drama without being Preachy. It is about a simple man named Joshua who by his actions seems to follow in the path of Jesus to the point of making you wonder whether or not that's who he really was. While it is so simply written, it is larger in thoughts and underlying messages that invoke thoughts and questions we all should be thinking about; especially in the kind of culture we find ourselves in today. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE!!

This book has been one that has impacted me in the journey to discover my faith/belief system. I needed to purchase a copy again, since I couldn't remember whose hands it fell into.
This book reintroduced me to who Jesus Christ is and continues to make me aware of how I treat others & how everything I say/do affects someone else.
